And then there was the "Senior Cinderella Bridge Club" from Luray Virginia These eight ladies have been getting together for 13 years playing bridge and managed to find their way to Chestnut Hall and New Oxford for their 2006 bridge party get away. They spent three days and two nights playing bridge, celebrating St. Urho's Day on March 16 (it celebrates a guy who drove grasshopers out of Finland), St Patrick's Day on March 17 while shopping around town and having a time of their lives with friends. |
Paul Rusesabagina Paul Rusesabagina was the guest speaker at the New Oxford High School on September 15, 2005. Paul Rusesabagina, the former manager of the Hotel Milles Collines, in Kigali, Rwanda had a special story to present.
In 1994, Rwanda experienced one of the modern world's most horrific events: the killing of nearly 1,000,000 of its people - by other Rwandans. During that time, Paul faced many dangerous challenges in protecting his own family, as well as protecting over 1200 people who had found sanctuary in the Hotel Milles Collines. In fulfilling his commitment and responsibility as manager of the Hotel, and in pursing his personal belief in the co-existence of humankind, Paul risked his own life to preserve the lives of those trapped within the hotel. This experience is dramatically depicted in the 2004 movie: "Hotel Rwanda".
We were truly blessed to have Paul stay with us at Chestnut Hall during his tour and lecture in New Oxford. |

Now here's a group of friends that know how to celebrate a 40th birthday. We won't tell you which one is Diana who happened to be celebrating her 40th birthday but this group of Texans found their way to New Oxford for that very reason. They all flew in to BWI on Friday night and spent a whirlwind weekend at Chestnut Hall. Among their site seeing was of course a tour of Gettysburg, Dinner at the Dobbin House, tea at the Carriage House Tea Room, Miss Saigon at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater and they even participated in a Scavenger Hunt through participating shops in New Oxford. Another couple from Virginia joined them at Chestnut Hall making it a birthday party for nine. Congratulations Diana on your 40th birthday and here's to the next 40. |
| Self Portrait by Kim Kamens Kim and her husband Adam spent Easter weekend 2005 at Chestnut Hall Bed and Breakfast. Left is her latest image "Self Portrait". This is quite a departure from the large colorful hand-carved relief panels of her previous sculptural series. Miles of thread and thousand of nails are the matter of Kim Kamens' newest body of work. At a distance, these black and white images appear to be charcoal or pencil drawings, but upon closer inspection, the labor intensive madness of the artist is revealed. Each "drawing" is composed of miles of sewing thread bridging nail heads to create a highly rendered image. She connects these points repeatedly until she achieves the desired tone and form. Kim's latest work can be seen at The Snyderman Gallery in Philadelphia, Pa from April 01 - May 14, 2005.

Mac Cosgrove-Davies and his wife stayed with us in June, 2004. Mac travels the globe while working for the World Bank. While in Burkina Faso, Mac used the 5x7 camera he made for field use while on a mission for the World Bank (Mac is the one hiding.) He uses large format cameras because the printing processes he uses requires 'contact printing.' That is, the print is the same size as the negative. The processes include gum bichromate, cyanotype, van dyke, and palladium. His prints are 'hand made' by mixing the chemistry, applying to paper, allowing the emulsion to dry in the dark, and then contact
printing using an ultraviolet light source. Aside from developing the negative, these processes do not require a dark room. Mac has been printing with these processes since the late 70's. |

While doing additional research in Gettysburg, Ken proposed to his new fiancé, Dianne at the Jenny Wade House.
